NeuroEAT: Project Pie

Filipinos love food. With the various trends that spread like wildfire, there's no denying that Juan has become more adventurous with what he puts in his mouth. Gone are the days when Filipinos settle for the simple and ordinary. We welcome foreign and fusion cuisines with open arms, not only for the pleasure of our palates but for new, overall experience.

Such is the case of Project Pie. I started to notice this on social media during a pitch proposal that we anchored on the eating and social media habits of Filipinos nowadays. I'll save you the geeky stuff, but simply put, food trends that caught the interest of the nation instantly becomes popular kids in social media. With the advent of #foodstagram and #foodgasm, it's not surprising how much people love expressing food pleasures online.

Going back to Project Pie, what makes it so special? To be honest, more than the pizza, what they sell is the new experience. As the name suggests, you're given freehand to build your own pizza, no holds barred. For Php 298.00 for a personal thin crust pizza, you can ask for any combination, put as much meat, cheese, spices and veggies as you want. You don't need to get your hands dirty either, you just have to line up and ask the super giddy staff what you want and watch your pizza come to life. Drinks are unlimited, soda, juice and iced tea all for Php 65.00.

The place can be packed even on weekdays, so get ready to fall in line.

Olive oil, canadian bacon, prosciutto, black olives, artichoke, onion garlic and mozzarella+ricotta cheese

Did the Project Pie bug get me? Just a little. I think the idea/concept is great, their place (I visited Alabang branch) is neat and cozy, the staff are enthusiastic and very cheerful, and the choices are plenty. The dough can be a little thicker IMO, and perhaps the white pizza (red is made with tomato-based sauce, white with only olive oil) can have olive oil and a bit of creamy white sauce instead? The experience is enjoyable, though I have to admit that finding the right combination is a bit tricky and might take you several visits to perfect. Personally, I still prefer the pre-set, signature pizza from other pizza places, but thank goodness Project Pie also offers seven, pre-set combos for the newbies, those in a hurry, or simply not into building their own.

BTW, we also ordered the nutella and peanut butter pie (Php 195.00), but I find the dough rubbery and too heavy for dessert. No good for me.

Price is a bit premium for a solo pizza, but the overall experience compensate for this. If you have kids, in love with DIYs and simply want a new pizza experience, go ahead and visit Project Pie.

Good luck and build the best pizza ever! :)

Gratitude List: January 2014

I can't believe the first month of 2014 is coming to an end, which means I'm two months away from my much anticipated Macau-Hongkong vacation with the sweetie to celebrate, no judgment please, our tenth year together! I feel like a lola. :)

I already booked our hotels/hostels and started plotting our itinerary which unlike previous vacations, is more relaxed and involves mostly food, more food and even more idle time. My boyfriend and I already reached a point where vacation no longer means stretching our energies too thin only to come back to work more exhausted than ever. I also learned to enjoy things slowly and immerse myself silently in the beauty of each country/culture I discover.  Ah, traveling always gives me blissful chills. Traveling to see new places, meet new people, learn more of the world, is never wrong in my vocabulary. Of the many things we have to buy in this world, traveling is one of the very few where we always get more than our money's worth.

Hey, I missed you so. (2009)

But before I get overwhelmed, I'd like to start a personal blogging tradition of listing the things I'm grateful for every close of the month. I know everyday is a blessing we should be thankful for, but the most especial ones deserve to be shared in hopes that you, my dear readers, also appreciate how blessed you are!

1. New year, new opportunities. They say great people don't see problems, only opportunities. Whatever baggage I collected last year, I've learned slowly (albeit painfully) to let go. And when I finally did, doors just keep on opening left and right, I can't keep up! :)

2. No hurries. Along with letting go, January also gave birth to a more relaxed and patient girl. Like any competitive person, I want things to happen my way, my time. Well, it doesn't work that way most of time. The universe is tricky and full of surprises, hurrying your way can lead you to situations you never liked in the first place. Relax and think with your head, not your emotions. And yup, good things happen to those who wait.

3. The joys of giving. :)

4. Little financial victories. I'm now more responsible with my money than say, five years ago. I save, I pay my insurance and I track my expenses. But this year, I'm taking it a notch higher by investing in mutual funds. Baby steps for #MyRoadtoRiches and #FinancialFreedom projects.

5. I'm healthiest to date. I have this chronic condition that I've kept on the back burner for years. Truth is, I was scared to know what it is and often self-medicate and dismiss the thought once the pain is gone. I finally did the right thing and walked into the hospital to get professional advice, which eventually led to lying under scary looking machines. It's probably the longest hours of my life as I wait outside the door for the results. Happy and relieved that I'm still okay, some condition I have to deal with but nothing life threatening whatsoever. Hooray!

How about you? What's your biggest blessing this January? It's nice to hear good things and spread positivity. So, spill! :)

Much Love,
Dang

NeuroEVENTS: PIXI Pilippines Launch

Diamond Makeup is a girl's bestfriend. When used correctly, makeup enhances our best features and conceals flaws. But on the other end, girls also share a common fear of ruining their skin as makeup are known to clog the pores that may lead to acne problems and dull skin.  Most commercial skin care and makeup products, ironically, contain harmful ingredients like parabens. Parabens are associated to premature skin aging and worse, breast cancer, infertility and even mental retardation for unborn children.

That is why it's such a relief to observe that some makeup companies are now going after the safer choice and stopped using parabens in their beauty products. Others were formulated paraben-free from the beginning. Hooray!

Such is PIXI, one of the newest makeup and beauty line that hit the Philippines late last year. Pixi was founded in London 12 years ago by Swedish born Petra Strand, an accomplished makeup artist, and is now being exclusively distributed in the Philippines by Glamourbox.

The formal launch was held at Simply Thai in Greenbelt, and featured Pixi ambassador and makeup artist Au Mauricio, demonstrating how quick and easy it is to use Pixi makeup to create a natural, "just had a good night's sleep" look.

Au Mauricio is a renowned makeup artist in the US, and is instrumental in bringing PIXI in the Philippines.
Model Theresa Jose wearing Pixi's  "no makeup but fresh and glowing" look

Let them girls play :)

I'm yet to road test Pixi makeup, but I'm looking forward to its promise to provide natural, glowing look with a few, multitasking makeup products that we can achieve in under 10 minutes. That will definitely make a lot of girls' lives easier in the morning! :)

Lots of nudes, neutrals and pinks. Hooray for office-friendly palette!

Interested to give Pixi a try? They have lots of unique and award-winning pieces (I'm intrigued with the flesh-toned eye bright liner) to check out. Visit their Facebook Page, Glamourbox website or visit your nearest Snoe outlet. Watch out for my Pixi reviews soon.

Shout out and congratulations to the lovely girls of Glamourbox, Kira and Lia. So happy to see both of you again! :)

What I Learned Today: Old Love and Old Souls

$

I learned that there are things I don't outgrow. Like the love for real books, handwritten letters and small whatnot. Nothing compares to the effort and personal touch that goes with letters or postcards received through the mail. It brings me back to yesteryears where I used to write letters to my cousins in the province, pass long notes in grade 6 pad to my high school friends and get truly kilig with love letters from suitors.

It may be uncommon nowadays, but my old soul will always remember the feeling.

OOTD: My Idea of Sexy

$

--- is actually called SMART AND COMFY.

Gone are the days when I fret and feel less of myself when I go out of the house not wearing high heels. I have no idea how I survived daily commute from Las Pinas to Intramuros in 4-inch pointed pumps, but I somehow did. I was 17, everything was bearable! Hailing FX cabs for hours was bearable. Wearing tight, pencil-cut skirt was bearable. 14 hours of schooling was bearable, enjoyable even! Not surprisingly, this thirst for validation commanded sexy outfits, too. And my idea of sexy then was that of a girl who's not afraid to bare her skin, should always be clad in fit tank tops with a little bit of cleavage (though I never had one, ha!), short shorts or dresses that hug you tight in all corners  curves. Just to be clear, I see nothing wrong with wearing these clothes provided it fits the occasion and won't compromise a girl's safety. In fact, I still own and enjoy wearing them to this day (short shorts in particular). But with age comes rediscovering your body and a new found appreciation for a different kind of sexy.  One that does not involve baring too much skin, but actually being comfortable and confident in your own.

You can be wearing full sleeves, long pants and still be sexy. You can rest your legs and trade your high heels with ballet flats or sneakers and still be very sexy. You need not be a size 2 to feel sexy. My point is, no one and nothing (READ: don't let glossies rule how you feel about yourself) should make you feel obligated to show skin all the time. Be smart to know what's safe and appropriate.

Take it from someone who learned this in a not-so-fun and scary way. Receiving cat calls is not a good nor safe way to start a day.

Five years ago, you'll barely see me with sleeves! :D
Chucks FTW!

At 28, I have nearly two dozens of godchildren. It's either an explicit sign of aging or a proof that my friends and relatives see me as a responsible second parent. As always, I'd rather go with the better perspective. Okay, I give that impression that I'm always in control and like to see things done the proper way. People think I'm strict, but they shouldn't trust me too much with their kids! I'll give them lots of sweets and chocolates and messy toys (like Play-Doh!) and books of adventures that will probably send them running around the house with mud on their shoes. Heck, kids should have fun! ;)

To my friends and relatives, be warned! I take ninang duties seriously.

What I learned Today: Claim with Conviction

$

So my Dream Board reminds me everyday of what I want to start and achieve in 2014, and purchasing a home for my mom proved to be the most ambitious. Equities cost an arm and a leg! I thought end of the year would be the most realistic time to start scouting, but the Big Man up there has other plans.

Today, I woke up earlier than usual, had my coffee and went on to claim another blessing with conviction. We should all do that! Claim with conviction. Never doubt. Trust fully. Know that if He brought you to it, He will get you through it. Not unscathed, but definitely stronger, wiser and more at peace. :)

The financial documents and all the math gave me headaches, but it's for my mom and all the heavenly signs are pointing to the same direction, so who am I to doubt His providence.

"A house for my mom. The biggest and most ambitious goal this year, it just has to land on number one. Unexpected things forced us to uproot from our own home in Cavite and rent in the city instead. With His provision, I'd like a new home with no contract expiration, and my mom can call her own."  - Dream Board 2014

Now that I'm one step closer to my goal, the next thing I should work on is how to DIY these pretty pretty art walls! Suggestions are welcome! :)

NeuroEAT: Zark's Burger in BF Paranaque

$

Time for a quick munchie post about one of my most sinful favorites - BURGERS.

My cousin has been raving about Zark's, a burger place that has started in the North, got really famous among the students in Taft Avenue, but has now taken the South people by storm. I visited their BF Paranaque branch along the busy President's Avenue and tried their monstrous offering.

Now, I'm not the type who gets impressed with size. I have a big appetite but small stomach, unfortunately. Hence I always go for quality than quantity and you'll hardly see me in buffets or unlimited whatever restaurants. But yeah, Zark's Burgers are huge! The boyfriend, who definitely has a lot more to fill, was happy with the serving size. They are filling and truly bang for the buck. We ordered the American All-Star which is their classic cheeseburger (P120) and Shaq (P130) which is cheeseburger topped with fried onion rings. We also added side orders of hand-cut fries and iced tea to complete the burger experience.

Here's our verdict:

SHAQ (P130)
ALL-STAR (120)

  • Serving size is huge. Thick burger patty, generous amount of condiments and filling burger bun. The hand-cut fries is crisp and golden and though it looks few, it's actually very heavy.
  • The place, at least their BF branch, is so-so. Other fancy burger places have way better interiors. But again, this is not the selling proposition of Zark's. But it won't hurt to improve on their chairs and tables, get better lighting and do something about their bare walls. Seriously, it feels like a school canteen.
  • For me, it's all about the patty. No matter how huge or how many ingredients you put, the patty will always make or break my burger deal. Zark's patty is tasty, juicy, and well-seasoned. It also doesn't taste like "home". Sorry, but home-cooked taste is only good for ulam in my books. Burger patty is a different story. It should be unique and distinct from the competition, and Zark's passed in that aspect.
  • You will really get value for your money. No wonder this is a hit for the young market. Our bill is no more than P500 for two big burgers, hand-cut fries, refillable iced tea and happy tummies. :)
  • Wide selection of burgers. From Jawbreaker (triple cheese burger which you get for free if you finish in 5 minutes, awesome!) to Burger from Hell (obviously the chili doom of burgers) to Bacon-wrapped (yes, BACON that wraps the whole thing), Zark's caters to all your burger fantasies. If you're not a burger guy, fret not. They have other offerings like buffalo wings, hotdog sandwiches, even rice toppings.
Will I go back to Zark's? Definitely! It's not my favorite patty in the world, but it's still on my top 5. Price is also reasonable so don't hold back! I hope they renovate their restaurant though. But give it a try, it's worth your cheat day. :)

Product Review: Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm

$

I got acquainted with Pixi makeup almost a month ago after a good friend invited me to attend their official launch. It's such a dainty and warm event, but missing the blogging scene for quite some time inevitably gave way to my occasional introvert self. After a few hellos and meeting some lovely ladies (Hi, Ae, Krissy, Kira and Lia!), I found myself dabbling with a handful of Pixi makeup testers in the play corner. Standing out from the neutrals are pretty tubes of lip colors which turned out to be tinted lip balms, in different shades of pinks, reds and plums. For a girl whose chapped lips respect no season, this is potentially, I dare say, an HG product.

I road tested the Pixi Tinted Brilliance Balm in Rosy Red for almost a month, and here are my thoughts:

  • Packaging and design is smart and makes it easy to reach the corners of the mouth. You can shape your lips sans lip liners. How convenient. :)
  • Color pay off is really good. In fact, Rosy Red can be too much to the faint-hearted. I'm not shy about my reds, but if you are, you may want to limit usage with just one or few swipes. Or, try other colors from this line. They have pinks and corals, which I'm yet to check out.
  • Smells like candy bubble gum. Yum!
  • Economical. I've been using it for almost a month and I haven't even turned the dial. This will stay fresh for 12 months, so for its price of less than Php 500, you get value for your money.
  • Moisturizing and suitable for people with dry, chapped lips. Did it solve mine? Improved, yes. Solved, not entirely. I haven't found a single product that can address this problem 100%. So the search continues.
  • Comes with gloss, it's a lip balm after all. If you're into matte, then this is not for you.

Did I like it? Yes! But with a bit of trick. I have full lips and so I do away with anything glossy {lest I want to look like I ingested a ton of collagen ;)}, and so every after application, I lightly blot my lips with soft tissue to lessen the shine. Voila! :)

One swipe and a few blot gives me the perfect, natural look I want.

It's the last last day of the love month, can you believe it? I hope your February was a blast. Mine was! :)

Shout out to my Sweetie for these pretties! I loved them! And thank you for treating me like your Ms. Universe, Valentine's or not. ;-)

Happy Weekend, loves!

#YOLO: 7107 International Music Fest

$

As a girl in her late twenties wearing several hats, I learned to become discriminating on how I spend my precious weekends. After personal errands, I make it a point to rest and make up for the lack of sleep. Hence, I favor less physical, morelaid back activities like getting massages, people watching at coffee shops or getting a bottle or two in one of the gazillion hole in the wall restaurants in the south a.k.a BF. (South people, represent!)

I wasn't always this uptight, you wouldn't believe my energy when I was in my teens and early twenties, and I think I can still unleash that adrenaline junkie anytime, though it would take a lot more than just dance floor and booze to lure me to get up, dress up and drive. I need more motivation. Like travel, the sea, or maybe seeing 90s rock stars!

It's as if the heavens had enough of my lola-ness and so sent a couple of 7107 International Music Fest tickets my way (Thank you, C!). I've seen some of the local bands in the lineup, and Clark Pampanga is a bit far, but my 90s heart cannot help but say yes to Red Hot Chilli Peppers! So I frantically called my friends whom I know share the same love for music and the Peppers, and the rest, as they say, is rock history.

It was more than hour of ripping performance that skyrocketed me back to the 90s. They opened their lineup with "Can't Stop" that elicited a crowd roar, but it's my personal favorites “Californication,”  “Soul to Squeeze,” “Otherside” and “Under the Bridge” which drove the audience, yours truly included, crazy. I was jumping and dancing and singing despite my flu and very sore throat, and clapped to the voice and musical antics of Anthony Kiedis, Flea and Chad like there's no tomorrow. The Peppers may have aged, and I hope Anthony drops the pornstache soon, but I dare say they sound much much better live. I wonder how they sustained an hour and a half of singing and playing the instruments like it's nobody's business. Flea and Chad were monsters on bass and drums. Awesome!

I'm obviously still nursing a hangover, so please excuse the flooding of photos and some tips for a successful international music fest trip. :)

BE READY. It's a festival, in an open field. Expect to get dirty, muddy and sweaty. Put on comfortable clothes, pack some anti-bugs and sunscreen and strut some cute sunnies and hat for protection. A sling bag is also ideal to keep your valuables close to you.
Chucks saved our day, and toes, too.
THERE'S NOTHING BEER CAN'T FIX. I was feeling a bit uptight in the company of kids. Yes, kids. So beer was really helpful to loosen things up before RHCP fired up the stage. And you wouldn't believe how helpful that mini flashlight was, especially in the forsaken portalets.

ROAD TRIP READY. Get a reliable driver (thanks, Sweetie!), an alert co-pilot and a well-tuned car (thanks, BFF for Harvey) to ensure a smooth, hassle free trip.
BE WITH THE BEST PEOPLE. It's an epic feeling that you would want to experience with people you love the most. And it's more fun if they are into music and rock bands, too!
And in case they are not, at least they still know how to have some good fun!

LIVE THE MOMENT. Most of my photos and videos of RHCP's performance were pretty useless. I was jumping and dancing and I lived the moment, so blurry photos didn't bother me at all.

And just to remind the girls how I remember Anthony from my teenage years. Whew.

Do you like going to music festivals? Not an expert here, but 7107 changed my heart. Kudos and may there be more international fests to come to Philippines soon. Happy weekend!

Much Love,
Dang

Gratitude List: February 2014

Ola! February has passed but I'm keeping up with my blogging tradition of acknowledging the good tidings. Pass the wine, please. Cheers!

1. Another year of love. February will always be special to me. It's the month I met my man eons ago, who's also born in February. Plus, it's the love month; I know I'm not the sentimental type, but I still feel happy seeing couples and families more expressive than ever. Flowers and kisses in every corner! I hope it happens everyday.

2. Mom's retirement house, which she can clean (my mom is OC about order and germs), decorate and redecorate, however she wants. It's hers.

3. A #YOLO experience. I attended my first legit music festival at age 28. Its' not too late to try something new, you know.

4. More time with friends. I was close to being a hermit last year, and so this year, I vowed to make time for my friends despite the busy schedule. I'm happy to report that my February was packed with catch-up drinks, spa session with my girls, a blogging event, some dinner dates and an out of town music fest to boot. Welcome me back!

Impromptu get together
Spa date to celebrate career milestones and what have you
Catching up with our longtime compadres. It was so fun and then it got blurry. :P
Date with my good friend and South partner P, at Bono Tei BF
Meeting my Malaysian babe, Ranie, during her quick Manila visit
That time I convinced her to eat Dinuguan with much success :D

5. Getting out of the limbo. Months of uncertainties and considering all minute details on how to proceed with my life was just so exhausting. It's like walking in circles which drained every bit of my motivation. If there's anything that helped me the most, it is my decision to retreat, rest, and just stop struggling. Then I swallowed my fat pride and admitted that I needed help and so I resorted to seeking sound advice from the right people. What happened next blew me away. Let's just say I've seen the hands of God put all things in perfect order. He put me in the place where I'm supposed to be and still blessed me with what I needed and prayed for. Unbelievable.

What are you most thankful about in February? :)

Much Love,
Dang

The Sun Will Shine Tomorrow

Photo VIA

I haven't written anything on this blog (nor anything else other than work) for the past two months. The longest hiatus I've had that I contemplated on closing this blog for good. But when I think about it, everything else in my life also took a backseat. Ever since that dreaded stroke hit my dad, nothing was ever the same. Our daily routine, my social calendar, work schedule, priorities, finances - everything. It pushed and stretched my human limits, physical and emotional, that I'm surprised to still see each morning.

But the sun will shine tomorrow. And while it's dark and cloudy, I'll hold on to my faith that anything is possible if we believe and trust enough. The Lord's mercy and grace is limitless. So I'll do what I'm called to do, give everything I have (we don't possess anything in this world to begin with) and just do all things for love.

For what it's worth, at least I now have an idea (and reason) for my first tattoo.

Much Love,

Smart Buys: Palmolive Naturals Body Wash

$

I'm frugal. I'm proud to be one. For Filipinos, being frugal or "kuripot" has a stigma of being greedy or selfish. In truth, being frugal or thrifty means using money and other resources carefully and not wastefully. So if you are smart and know better than wasting your hard-earned moolah by buying things you really don't need nor suit you, then cheers, and welcome to the frugal community!

Part of this prudence is my quest to find products and services that are of high quality, perfect for my needs and are reasonably priced. Nope, I don't mindlessly go for the cheapest option available. Instead, I buy with due diligence whether it's for big ticket purchases like gadgets, house loan, etc., or as simple as the skincare products I use. I'm only willing to pay a premium if I get value for my money and get the results I wanted. It is not unusual for me to spend two hours in the grocery reading, inspecting, researching (thank you Google) the customer value propositions of different products in the market. I can spend the next 15 minutes weighing the pros and cons of different brands of let's say, cotton pads. I kid you not.

So when my best friend and kikay consultant, Tara, introduced me to the newest line of body wash from Palmolive Naturals, this nerd knew what exactly to do. I inspected the two variants (Milk & Honey and Milk & Olive), their ingredients, their CVP and yes, even the SRP. Both are very moisturizing and feels soft on the skin, thanks to their milk protein content. But my favorite is the Milk  & Olive variant because it smells like a more sophisticated, grown-up lady version of my usual milk bath. :) Plus, it saved me from the skin drought after too much sun soaking in Bohol for three days (posting a photo diary on this adventure soon!). Best of all, it's very creamy and lathers really well which means a bottle will give you a lot of yummy, refreshing showers. It is definitely a good buy at only Php 80.00/200 ml. bottle. Don't just take my word for it, try it for yourself!

Any good finds or frugal tips and thrills you want to share with me? Email me at dang_villanueva@yahoo.com or dang.villa@gmail.com. Let's make kikay shopping much smarter. :)

#LolaVibes Weekend in Panglao, Bohol

I'm embracing my lola-ness more than ever these days. I'm not sure when it started, but I'm in a phase where being alone didn't mean I'm lonely and saying no is rarely followed by sorry and guilt. Also, I don't feel the need to be friends with everyone anymore. I'm perfectly happy to be in fair terms with everyone and close to only a handful. You see, I was never the friendly kid in school. Back then, I thought it was something I should be sorry about. People thought I was snotty, and I can't say it didn't bother me. But age and experience came to play, and I slowly learned to respect that people are entitled to their opinion and the same applies to me. So if other people are entitled to think I'm a snob, then it's no longer my problem. In fact, I'm entitled to think of myself as a vampire, a unicorn, what have you. As my friend R puts it, with fabulous sparkly wings! ;-) Little girls, you can feel and be whatever you dream to be. As long as you don't hurt anyone, don't be sorry about it.

Speaking of which, my not so recent company trip to Panglao, Bohol witnessed my ultimate lola vibes. Since it's my second time to visit Bohol, and I've done most of the touristy things, I decided it will be a good time to DISCONNECT.  (Click and read why it's good for you!)

I didn't sign up for any group activities and stayed in the resort most of the time. It's a #LolaVibes weekend, but who says it can't be fun? :)

Flight was early by 45 minutes. Good job, PAL!

We stayed at Amorita, a very nice resort that offers a magnificent view of the Alona Beach.

Luxurious bed and sheets: Check

They also deliver freshly baked goodies everyday. With personal notes, too. :)

I started the following day with an intense Yoga session by the view deck. It was way better than doing it in a confined space. I arrived Bohol with bad colds, and the fresh air alone cleared it the next day. Unbelievable.
I went kayaking alone, but was spotted by my colleague who took this photo.

I took advantage and posed for the camera. ;)
I was feeling sleepy, so I went back to our room, sat in the veranda and read the newspapers. So comfy that I snoozed for a good hour or so.
After dinner, I decided to join my friends for one round of the cheapest cocktails I've known to date. Buy one, take one for only Php 50.00. We're talking about imported spirits here --- Absolut, Malibu, Jack. Sulit! :)
I also went biking solo. I got some scratches and my butt cheeks hurt, but it was fun!
I went biking again with my buddies C and F the following day. We went out of the resort and pedaled our way to some nooks and corners of Panglao. Aside from the sheepish grins from the manongs, it was a good workout.
Of course I went swimming. The infinity pool was too beautiful to resist! :)

Sunbathed, too. Swim, sunbathe, swim, sunbathe. In numerous cycles. = NEGRA
To complete this lola-ness, I got teary eyed when the Loboc Children's Choir serenaded us with songs like "Paraiso", "The Prayer" and "There Can Be Miracles". Our company president looked like she wants to adopt all of them amazing kids. :D
Burned a few more hours doing nothing

Then joined a competitive card game I don't even know what to call ;)
We can't leave without eating at The Buzz Cafe by Bohol Bee Farm. To be honest, there's not a lot of good places to eat in Bohol, and food isn't that great compared to say, Cebu.

The Buzz Cafe offers the best food in Alona. I ordered cheesy lasagna which comes with salad (with flowers!) and special grainy breads that they bake and sell.
Don't ever leave the island without trying the Buzz Cafe ice cream. As in never ever. Take my word for it! They have the creamiest, tastiest local, homemade ice cream I've ever tried. And I'm an ice cream geek so I know what I'm talking about. I tried their Avocado first, and then went back with my friends where we ordered three freaking flavors. We can't decide which is the best. They're that good. Tried Ube, Corn, Malunggay and Avocado. They also have unique flavors like Malunggay (tastes nutty) and Spicy Ginger.

View from where we had lunch. Philippines is really beautiful!

Wanderlust: Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia

After learning that I will move to a new country soon, my good friend R graciously offered to host me to a 3-day visit to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. R, together with her adorable cousins, visited the Philippines last March. My boyfriend and I promised to return the favor and visit them in May 2015 for the Harvest Festival, which obviously won't happen anymore. I'd love to see them before I leave, so we decided to arrange a quick trip by end of July.

This will be my third time to visit KK. The first time was with my girlfriends. I was young and with some of my best girls, so naturally, most of my memories were of food, alcohol, dressing up, partying and a lot of silly stories that still make me and my BFF Tara cry with laughter. The second time was with the boyfie. It was a celebration of my 27th birthday in the small but charming island of Sapi.

Spent my 27th birthday at Sapi Island | 2012

This time, our hosts plan to bring us to their native village two hours away from the city. I have no clue where it is, but R said it's like Tagaytay except that there's a nearby falls where we can swim and cook BBQs. I'll let my OC self rest and leave the preparation to my friends.

UPDATE: According to R, their village is called Tambunan. The valley is peppered with terraced padi and  picturesque villages. There's also a dense bamboo forest surrounding the village, a legacy of the British colonial period.  Also, the Rafflesia Forest Reserve is just outside  this village. Rafflesia is one of the world's largest flowers. This strange plant is called the "corpse flower" because of its foul odor, which some say smells like rotting flesh. Cool facts! :)

Apart from that, I still have 1.5 days to spare and so I decided I'll go on a foodtrip and visit some places of Sabah culture. A few minutes of research and some friendly recos brought me to this list.

SIGNAL HILL OBSERVATORY PLATFORM. PHOTO VIA http://ilovesabah.info.

I have a fascination for observatory towers. I guess it has something to do with my belief that we always have to see the bigger picture to better appreciate a place, a situation, even a person. Also, looking over a place from greater heights humbles me and make me realize how small I am and that the world is not always about me. It keeps me grounded.

Signal Hill is the highest point in the city and a good place to watch the sunset. The boyfriend and I get a high doing this. A big can of Tiger beer sounds good, too.

A couple of minutes drive from Padang Merdeka will bring you to the airy deck where you can get amazing views that extend to the outlying islands of the Tunku Abdul Rahman Park. Best of all, it's FREE!

MARI MARI CULTURAL VILLAGE. PHOTO VIA www.AirAsia.com.

A visit to this village will immerse you with the different traditions of five Sabahan ethnic tribes - Bajau, Lundayeh, Murut, Rungus and Dusun. There's blowpipe-making demonstration, fire-starting using bamboo and tattoo-making. Very similar to the Philippines. So what I'm more interested to try are the traditional delicacies from each ethnic group.

The price is a little steep at around RM140 or Php 1,900/pax and the place is around two hours away from the city so I suggest you spare a day to get the most out of it.

The Sabah State Museum is a good alternative if you want to know more about the Sabah culture without going out of the city. The place offers information on their Natural History, Ceramics, Ethnography and ArcNhaeology exhibits. There's also a Heritage Village where you can  experience different types of traditional houses of the various indigenous groups of Sabah.

To reach the Sabah State Museum and Heritage Village, ride bus no.13 (towards Penampang) from either bus stations in front of City Hall or Wawasan Plaza in KK. Admission fee is RM15 of Php140 for non-Malaysians.

KK NIGHT MARKET. Photo via http://www.borneoecotours.com.

Food is and will always be a big part of my travels. Food represents the character and diversity of different race and culture, and it's also a good way to know locals! Start a conversation about food and you'll never run out opinions. Try it! :)

The KK Night Market is one of the most famous in South East Asia and promises fermented prawn, jungle honey and exotic fruits as well as a thousand and one kinds of BBQs. Now I'm hungry! I love the Hawker Food Stalls in Kuala Lumpur, and so I'm really anticipating an even greater gastronomic adventure in KK.

The KK Night Market is located in Jalan Kampung Air near the old Filipino craft market.

I hope you find this helpful, especially if you find yourself KK-bound anytime soon. :) Safe travels!

The Secret of Tips 'N Toes Nail Salon

$

Filipinos have become more and more particular when it comes to nail care. Hence, nail salons appeared everywhere, offering women (and even men) with a hundred ways to pamper their nails, hands and feet. With the many options on hand, it's easy to get confused where to go to get the best nail care that fits your need and budget. So what should we look for in a nail salon? My personal standards remained simple and the same through the years.

Hygiene, Practicality and Professionalism.

Hygiene is top priority. If the salon does not clean and sanitize their tools and towels, I'll head straight the door. Cutting, buffing and polishing our nails can result to some small nicks and cuts that can go unnoticed. This is the perfect entry point for nasty infections especially if the manicure and pedicure tools are not sterilized in between clients. So make sure that your salon is strict in their sterilization procedures.

I'm a practical girl. While it's true that manicures and pedicures can go as low as under Php100, they simply don't last and worse, can even chip the next day. So I stick to pricier salons that use quality polishes that can last at least two weeks. At the end of the day, I save myself from ugly nails (which is a no no in my line of work), frustration and I get more value for my money.

Lastly, going to a nail salon is one of the few "me time" of most girls. Relaxing ambiance and professional service seal the deal for me. I don't like televisions, loud chatters and most especially, inattentive and nosy staff. For me, the level and quality of service of any nail salon depends heavily on their people. Training and proper decorum should always be observed. Nail technicians who are attentive to the client's needs, courteous and friendly are the best assets of any business.

Such is the case of Tips 'N Toes Nail Salon. They've been in the business for more the 20 years and even pioneered the sculptured nails (nail extension service) in the country. They were also first to use the term "nail technicians", in efforts to professionalize their services and veer away from the usual "manicurista." I was lucky to get invited by a good friend to try the services of Tips 'N Toes and meet the owners alongside. Jennifer Tipton-Angeles is the powerhouse behind Manila's foremost nail salon. After a long and very fun chat over manicures and later on, seafood katsu; I learned from her that their foot spa actually started from her idea of doing "facials" for the feet. It was a brilliant proposition (20 years ago!) that people started flocking to Tips 'N Toes to get their tired hands and feet pampered and the industry soon followed suit. Aside from that, Jennifer also made sure that their nail technicians are trained professionally using international standards, with trainers that they hired straight from abroad. They also use premium products and equipments similar to what's used in Hollywood.

The rest as they say, is history. While new salons with different gimmicks surfaced, Tips 'N Toes remained true to their core value of offering only the best products and the highest level of professional service. Jennifer and her sister Margaret also keep their eyes open for new technologies and trainings whenever they travel abroad. These, and a pool of seasoned and loyal technicians, most of them have been with them for more than 10 years, are the secret "weapons" of Tips 'N Toes.

I visited their Glorietta 5 branch and tried their signature spa manicure and pedicure. I'll let the photos tell more about my experience.

White, teal and silver dominated the interior. Not too girly and very classy. It's no surprise that they also have a strong male clientele.
The most comfy nail salon chair I've tried. It's actually a massage chair equipped with built in foot tub with neon lights. Very nice!
Rows and rows of imported polishes. As always, it was a hard decision to choose just one.
Best of all, the nail technicians are all well-trained, attentive and courteous. The kind lady who did my nails has been with Tips 'N Toes for 16 years! Just wow. It's no surprise especially that the owners treat them like family, which actually warms my heart. :)
They use special scrubs, warm honey and grapeseed oil which made my hands instantly softer and fairer.
Perfect Nails Day
Say hi to the beautiful bride-to-be, Gem of Rare Vanity. Trivia: This sweet and fun lady is a Harry Potter geek! :)
With the owners, Jennifer (in black) and Margaret (in beige), and other invited guests in a "Familia Zaragoza" photo. :D
I'm obviously a happy customer. It's been almost two weeks and my nails are still okay especially my toes.

Try Tips 'N Toes the next time you need some pampering. They offer mani-pedi, waxing, eyelash extensions and even massages. The most basic manicure and pedicure starts at Ph190 and Php220. For a complete list of their services and prices, visit their Facebook Page or visit their website at http://tipsntoes.com.ph/.

Thank you to Elaine, Jennifer and Margaret for having me. I hope to visit you again soon! :)

12 Things You Need to Know About Oral Care

$

0

I had the funniest conversation with my closest girls about always smelling good, people's natural scents and well - nasty body odors. As much as I want to impose equality, I have to agree that girls are ALWAYS expected to smell good compared to boys. Of course it's no excuse for boys to put their guards (and deodorants) down, but somehow, their athletic activities and abundant sweat glands give them a bit of a leeway to occasionally smell otherwise.  Girls do not have any excuse.

Fortunately, this is not the case for oral care. Boys, girls, young and old, we are all expected to always mind our breath. Being social beings, it is a must to ensure that we have fresh breath whenever we talk to people, which means all the time! My friends and I agreed that it's a social responsibility, and we even made a pact to be honest with each other and with people around us in an effort to promote healthy mouths and fresh breath all around! :)

In view of this, here are 12 things you should know about oral care:

1.  The perfect angle to tilt your toothbrush is 45 degrees for that optimal reach. To properly brush your teeth tilt the brush at a 45° angle against the gumline and sweep or roll the brush away from the gumline by using short strokes. Gently brush the outside, inside and chewing surface of each tooth using short back-and-forth strokes. Gently brush your tongue to remove bacteria and freshen breath. Proper brushing takes at least two minutes — that's right, 120 seconds! FACT: Most adults do not come close to brushing that long.

2. The ideal length of floss to use is 20 inches. Ideally, floss should be waxed. Floss removes plaque and debris that sticks in between teeth and below the gumline, polishes tooth surfaces, and controls bad breath. Waxed floss allows the floss to glide along your gums.

3.  Three months is the ideal lifespan of a toothbrush. Clinical research shows that a new toothbrush can remove more plaque than one that's worn out, ensuring that your brush is working its hardest to help keep your teeth clean and healthy. That's because, no matter what type of toothbrush you use, its bristles can become frayed and worn and may lose their effectiveness.

4.  A healthy gum is pink in color and does not bleed when brushing or flossing. If you experience bleeding gums often, visit your dentist as this may be a sign of oral problem.

5. There are 500-650 types of bacteria species living in the oral cavity, one of the main reasons for having bad breath.Over 500 different strains of bacteria have been detected in the human mouth, though most people are only host to 34 to 72 different varieties. Most of these bacterial species appear to be harmless when it comes to our health. Other bacteria actually protect our teeth and gums. There are some bacteria, however, that we'd rather do without, since they cause tooth decay, bad breath and gum disease.

6.  Mouthwash takes care of the spaces inside the mouth that your toothbrush cannot reach. A mouthwash with fluoride will help reduce cavities and periodontal disease.

7.   There are two kinds of tooth stains: intrinsic and extrinsic. Extrinsic stains are those that appear on the surface of the teeth as a result of exposure to dark-colored beverages, foods and tobacco, and routine wear and tear. Superficial extrinsic stains are minor and can be removed with brushing and prophylactic dental cleaning. Stubborn extrinsic stains can be removed with more involved efforts, like teeth bleaching. Persistent extrinsic stains can penetrate into the dentin and become ingrained if they are not dealt with early. Intrinsic stains are those that form on the interior of teeth. Intrinsic stains result from trauma, aging, exposure to minerals (like tetracycline) during tooth formation and/or excessive ingestion of fluoride

8.   We need to use a tongue cleaner. A tongue cleaner (also called a tongue scraper or tongue brush) is an oral hygiene device designed to clean the bacterial build-up, food debris, fungi, and dead cells from the surface of the tongue. Using a tongue cleaner will ensure a cleaner, healthier mouth.

9.   Oral Health is linked to systemic health. Did you know that your oral health can offer clues about your overall health— or that problems in your mouth can affect the rest of your body?

10. Canine teeth are the cornerstones of the mouth. Known as the strongest teeth, the canine teeth are also responsible for keeping the face shape intact. Most common action of the canines is tearingof food. The canine teeth are able to withstand the tremendous lateral pressures from chewing. There is a single cusp on canines, and they resemble the grasping teeth found in carnivorous animals.

11. Tooth Sensitivity is triggered by food, drinks, air and touch. This problem often happens when gums recede. The gum tissue acts like a protective blanket to cover the roots of the teeth. As the gums recede the underlying tooth roots are exposed. They are not covered by hard enamel. Think of your gums and the enamel on your teeth as a down comforter covering and protecting your body from the cool winter air. Over time, the gums may recede or the enamel or dentin on your teeth may wear down, creating the condition for tooth sensitivity. Thousands of tiny dentinal tubules (channels) leading to the tooth's nerve center (pulp) are than exposed. These tubules allow more stimuli like heat, cold or pressure to reach the nerve in the tooth and you feel pain.

12. Visit your dentist at least twice a year. You should have your teeth checked and cleaned at least twice a year, thoughthey may recommend more frequent visits. Regular dental exams and cleaningvisits are essential in preventing dental problems and maintaining the health of your teeth and gums. At these visits, your teeth are cleaned and checked for cavities. Additionally, there are many other things that are checked and monitored to help detect, prevent, and maintain your dental health like stains, crooked teeth, cause of bad breath and other mouth problems.

Gratitude List: Downtime

$

Glenda, one of the most powerful storms to hit the the Philippines this year, has left eastern and southern Luzon in shambles. Manila, the mega city and the country's capital, was left in chaos and some areas remain powerless for several days now. We got our power back a few hours ago after four days of struggling with darkness. While I'm too happy that the power, along with all the comforts it brings our home, is back, I'm also grateful to have a bit of a lull to see a few things in a totally different light. So today, I woke up early from a fake cold night, grabbed my computer and listed some things I'm thankful for during my forced downtime.

Preparation is key. Parts of Manila was (and some are still) in the dark. Most households I know are equipped with the usual emergency supplies but only to a certain extent. Are we prepared in the event that the blackout stretches to a week or more? With the batteries, emergency lights and candles sold out in almost all groceries in our area (only on the second day!), I guess not. Time to beef up my Doomsday Preppers vibe.

Be with an employer who genuinely cares for you. It was 3am, and I was desperately trying to do something about the banging windows and ceiling when I read the office thread over WhatsApp. It was our business unit head, tracing the whereabouts and safety of each and every employee. I know some companies, especially those whose clients are overseas, cannot suspend work because of the nature of their business. Not entirely their fault, but I'm just happy to be where I am right now where people's safety matters more than anything.

Do not take communication for granted. I cannot stress enough how it's so hassle-free to communicate these days. You can message or call anyone with a few tap on your personal gadgets. For a digital immigrant who still remembers how my dad and uncles send voice tapes from abroad, I value how communication is now at our fingertips. Sadly, once a thing becomes too easy and too abundant, people tend to take it for granted. So when the networks went wonky, people scrambled to their phones to reach their loved ones. Do we really have to wait for a storm to reach out?

Home is where my heart is. Power was out in our place for four days. That's almost a hundred hours of sweltering in the dark. By the second day, cabin fever sets in. In this time and age when I and most people in my circle are connected to the web 24/7, I'm sure you get where this is heading. A number of good friends who live in buildings with generators or in unaffected areas offered to host me and my family until we get our power back. But my mom is old-school and didn't want to leave the house. I was very tempted to stay at a friend's place since I needed to sleep to be able to work, but somehow, I long for my home. It's where I'm most at peace despite the lack of all the usual comforts. Aside from the sleepless nights, it still wasn't so bad.

Makeup-less and home with the boss

Live a simple life. A friend posted about how they drove for hours to find a hotel because her kids cannot take the power-less night. They didn't find any because all hotels are fully booked, and people were actually waiting in line. She also said how she remembers that when they were kids, they managed to survive a few days without electricity and how people nowadays will die of the inconvenience rather than the typhoon. I have nothing against people, especially families with kids, who cannot survive a night without hot water and air conditioning. But personally, I want to try to keep a simple lifestyle and be less dependent on the everyday luxuries. Just in case we get doomed, I have better chances of adapting.

No sandwich maker? That's fine. I'm happy with my hot and freshly delivered taho! :)

One day at a time. In relation to living a simple life, no power means no fridge, which means we have to cook food just enough to finish in one sitting. On a broader sense, there will be days and instances when the world will ask us to slow down and not be sick and worried too much about the future and just live one day at a time. We could all use a break from paranoia.

Sharing one of my favorite verses from the scriptures

Pray for resilience. In times of difficulties, we usually pray for the energy and strength to survive. In life, we aim to display courage and power. In truth, when our humanly strength and betrays us, what we need is the ability to spring back to our original form and bounce back from all the difficulties. SHRUG. IT. OFF.

My mind is a bottomless pit of insights and life lessons the past days. I guess 96 hours of downtime did me well. Wishing everyone's safe after the storm. Take care!

Much Love,
Dang

The 3-month late Birthday

Here's a 3-month late post on how I spent my 29th birthday. It was a difficult time because my dad was still in the hospital then, hence the missed birthday blog. But despite that, my family was still able to arrange a swimming party for the April celebrants and some relatives from abroad spending summer vacation in the PH. How blessed can I be! :)
It was a fun night of hot spring pools, cakes and bubblies.

On top of that, my colleagues invited me to a pseudo brainstorming, which turned out to be a Japanese birthday lunch. Hooray for good friends!
For what it's worth, Happy Birthday to me! :)

What I Learned Today: In a Snap of a Finger

I expected my third visit to Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia to be relatively uneventful. But traveling has so many ways to delight and surprise us. I met several new friends, set foot on the outskirts of the Sabah state, tried pickled fruits that tasted like bugs, traditional Malay and Dusun cuisine and a really badass rice wine called Tapai. A few sips and you're buzzed for the night.

On top of that, I also managed to get myself into a very sticky situation that involved near drowning, a good amount of blood and medical evacuation from Kiulu river. Don't panic, I've fully recuperated. My frantic mother scolded me for being too "brave". What was I thinking when I jumped in the raging water to body raft, as if river rafting is not exciting (and risky) enough?

It was an unforgettable experience. But while it's nerve-wracking, I don't think it will hinder me from seeking future adventures. In fact, it drew me closer to my desire to see and experience more of this world. Among the things that ran through my mind after brushing with death, this truth struck me the most. If we can be gone in a snap of a finger, why waste our lives with mediocrity and regrets? Each morning is an opportunity to chase our dreams harder, to act kinder towards our neighbors, to love more passionately, to serve our Lord more faithfully, and never forget, to find life's greatest adventures.

Thank you for all the love and well wishes! I'm up and about and ready for my next adventure. Shout out to the lovely Kitingan family who hosted us so graciously especially to Ann who escorted me to the clinic and all the way to the hospital. All my love for you guys!
